Image Details:

This is a 15-panel mosaic of the Milky Way capturing the region of Sagittarius up to the Vulpecula region. Our solar system currently orbits the galaxy with a ~60 degree tilt, so at certain times of year the brighter region of the galaxy can be seen as a white-yellow pillar stretching across the sky. While the rich color of yellow starlight scattering off interstellar dust (and green airglow, a natural phenomenon of the Oxygen in our atmosphere) is best brought out in long exposure, many of the details, including the obscuration of dark nebula and the brighter stellar nurseries (which appear pink in the photo), are easily seen with the naked eye from unpolluted skies.
